How to Keep Skunks Away: Skunk Prevention Tips

Critters can be a nuisance when they invade your property, but nothing is as obnoxious as the skunk. Having skunks in your garden or home can be a very bad and smelly experience. The scent of the skunk is something that is hard to get rid of, and that's why you should keep them away from your property before they can get in. Below are some prevention tips that you can consider to keep the critters out of your property.

Fences and Barriers

There are several things that you can do with your property that will make it less attractive to animals. And one of these is having a fence that will prevent skunks from entering the premises. It is recommended to embed the fence a couple of inches in the ground to prevent the critters from digging below it to get inside the yard. You can also use chicken wire on the lower portion of the fence to stop skunks, as well as other animals.

If you already have an existing fence, determine how the skunks can still enter your property. Find out if there are holes or gaps along the perimeter of the fence. You should do the repairs right away to keep animals out of the property.

Stop Feeding the Skunk

Skunks are shy animals, and they have a very good reason why they were compelled to go inside your yard. And the most logical reason is food. It is important that secure food resources within your yard. Your trash bin must have a secure cover. Vegetables and fruits in the garden can also attract the skunks. To prevent them from eating your crops, surround the plants with a low fence. Skunks are not able to climb, but they can dig underneath the fence. That's why you should consider embedding the fence a couple of inches below the soil to deter skunks from trying to dig into your crops.

Do Home Repair

If you notice your walls having holes, repair them right away. That way you prevent skunks from entering the space and turn it into their nest. If the skunk has dug underneath to access the foundation of your building and found a hole going into the basement, then you need to repair them right away. Just make sure that you are not trapping the skunk inside the premises, or else you will have a very smelly problem.

Anti-Skunk Home Remedy

Another way to keep skunks out of your property is through home remedies. It has been proven that pepper acts as a repellant to the animals. And the best thing about the home remedy is that it is cheaper than more of the ones found on the market. To make an anti-skunk repellant, you need a tablespoon of Cheyenne pepper, chopped jalapenos, and chopped yellow onion. Mix all of them into two quarts of water, and let them boil for 20 minutes. Once you finished boiling the pepper mix, strain the liquid. Then place the liquid in a spray bottle, and spray it on areas where skunks often go. You need to re-spray the homemade repellant every three to five days.

These are some of the ways you can prevent skunks from entering your property. If you have one all the tips and you still suffer from a skunk invasion at night, then you should consider hiring a professional wildlife removal company to keep skunks out of your property.
