How to Trap a Skunk

Skunks are creatures that are harmless, but when provoked, they can react in a way that will leave you with unpleasant memories. They also eat any food they come across. If these creatures are provoked, they spray as high as 15 feet leaving an odor that lasts for days. Once they get to your home, it's not an easy thing getting rid of them. The best thing is that this can be prevented. The most effective method to get rid of skunks is by using a large cage trap which is firm on the ground and bait the trap. You need to be very careful while doing so to avoid being sprayed.

What Type of Trap is the Best?

There are varieties of skunk traps out there, but the best is a live cage trap. This is in the size of a raccoon, and one advantage with it is that the skunk cannot spray you. This cage should be 30" long, 12" high and 10" wide. Although it can be a challenge getting one of this, there are many manufacturers you can buy from, and you have the best option to catch a skunk. The other trap type that you can use is the solid-wall trap. Just like the raccoon-sized, a skunk will neither spray you nor see you.

What Type of Bait Is the Best?

Once you have the cage, the next thing to do is to place bait in the cage. This is meant to attract this small creature. One question that many ask is what type of bait should be used. Skunk loves meat making meat-based bait your best option. The most common meat-bait that is used is wet cat food since it is not advisable to use dry cat foods which could be a danger for your pet. The other bait that you can use is marshmallows.

The Best Method to Use

If you have already seen a skunk in your yard, the best method to use is to place the trap near where you have seen it. If you suspect that a skunk could get into your yard, you can place it where you think it will come through. It should be placed where the skunk does not have an option apart from getting inside the trap. This is best possible near the exit or entrance. It is advisable that if you have already seen a skunk, set the trap at night to avoid being sprayed.

Handling the Skunk in the Cage

The best thing to do is approach the cage with an old heavy blanket ensuring the skunk cannot see you. Cover the cage with the blanket in order to catch whatever it sprays and to prevent bad odor which can be a challenge to remove.

Skunks are harmless, but they are not the best when provoked. It is not necessary that you pay an expert to remove skunks in your homestead. You can be the expert by using the right cage and bait as well by following the safety measures.
